Does Colour Psychology Really Help When Choosing Bedroom Colours?
There is so much variety and quality available in bedroom furniture these
days that it seems a pity to spoil the overall effect of a newly furnished
bedroom by choosing colours that do not complement each other, or the furniture.
An excellent method of choosing the colour scheme for the bedroom is to combine
personal taste with colour psychology to get an effect that still reflects the
personality of the decorator, but with the scientific foundation to support
colour choices. The fundamentals of colour psychology apply in a broad sense, at
least enough to establish some common ground.
Since we spend a third of our lives sleeping, the bedroom is an important
space that deserves much more consideration in terms of decorating than it
usually gets. For children, it is also a play and study area, a retreat and
somewhere for friends to hang out, so the choice of
furniture Brisbane needs to
reflect this. Once the furniture has been decided, the next important decision
is the predominant colour.
The current decorating trend is to paint throughout in white or another light
neutral colour to create a sense of space, then use brighter colours for
contrast in soft furnishing, wall hangings and paintings, vases etc. The
downside to using white is that it is requires constant attention to keep it
clean, and it can create a sterile feeling in a room if there are not sufficient
contrasting colours.
For a bedroom colour that promotes rest and renewal for an adult, blue is an
excellent choice as it actually causes the body to produce calming chemicals. It
is well known for creating a peaceful, tranquil environment and is often used in
rooms where people are under stress, such as undergoing a job interview or an
academic exam. If used to excess, it can make the room appear cold and
depressing.
Choosing colours for a children's bedroom using colour psychology presents a
dilemma. For example, pink is the dominant choice for a girl's bedroom because
it is thought to promote tranquillity. Initially this is correct, but after some
time in a pink room, the occupants can become agitated, as pink is essentially
light red, which is a stimulating colour. Yellow is a cheerful colour, but it is
also the most fatiguing to the eye. While it stimulates the mind and encourages
creativity, it does not promote rest and can cause anxiety. Even new
bedroom furniture Brisbane
would have little effect if the wrong colour is chosen.
Using neutral colours overall, and choosing the reds, blues, greens, yellows
and pinks in varying shades and combinations in the soft furnishings and
decorator items could be the best overall solution. If the decision instead is
to create a bedroom with a dominant colour, then careful consideration of the
principles of colour psychology should be the guide to creating a beautiful,
restful bedroom.
